If you hate using dreaded stinky or "safe" fly killer spray , do what I do .
Use furniture wax spray polish.
If fly is on table say give a few sprays 20 inches above it . the mist will fall and...

Kernow is right , if using a heat gun wear a good quality breathing apparatus / mask . Not the cheapest one . How much is your your lung protection worth ? It will be a time consuming job to strip it...

Use Matt varnish for the steps . Better than satin even . Sand , dust off and wipe with a damp cloth , begin at the top of the stairs and work your way down .
