Renovating a Thatched property -- suitable heating and water solutions?
Hi, Just about to embark on a massive (some say mad!!) renovation project. I have purchased a derelict thatched cottage (recorded protected structure)on 4 acres. I have gone through all the conservation bits and pieces and have secured my declaration 57 which as I now know is very important. My conservation officer is very helpful but unfortunately very vague on the the whole grants thing as can only be expected in the current climate!!
My query is pretty general as in any advice greatfully received. I have found a thatcher that I find really helpful and he is going to do the renovation throughout. My decisions now are around suitable heating and water solutions, what is is the best thing to do - geothermal, solar, radiators etc boilers, pellet stoves, condenser boilers it all seems a mine field..... I know that there are grants available how easy are they to access, are they up front or retrospective or are they even available - has anyone been through the process? Many thanks for advice in advance. SJ_P |

For grants see www.sei.ie
You have to be approved for a grant before work commences. I'd fill out the forms quick and get approved. They might be gone in the next budget. |

RE: renovation
Grants are paid retrospectively. You have to install heating system first and then they come and inspect and then the cheque comes. Have just finished a five year renovation project of an old cottage. Let me know if you want to know about wood pellet boiler heating and solar panels. Good luck and enjoy!!
